Christina to Star in “The Angel Makers”

Christina Hendricks, Emily Watson to Star in ‘The Angel Makers’ (Exclusive)

The romantic drama centers on the women of England’s Yorkshire Moors, who were left to maintain the farms when their men headed off to fight in France in 1917.

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks and two-time Oscar nominee Emily Watson will star in The Angel Makers, a WWI romantic drama that will be directed by English filmmaker Jon Amiel.

Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Max Riemelt (Sense8) and David Kross (The Reader) have also joined the film, which is slated to begin production in January.

The film, based on true events, centers on the women of England’s Yorkshire Moors, who were left to maintain the farms when their men headed off to fight in France in 1917. When the women enlist German POWs from a nearby internment camp to do labor on their land, affairs soon begin to bloom.

Six-time Emmy nominated actress Hendricks will play the leader of the women, whose skills as a midwife and witch doctor are needed to mix the potions that can save a life, or take it away.

Arclight Films will present the project to buyers at TIFF and is handling worldwide sales. “We have all of the elements of a major commercial success in place; an award-winning and visionary director, a team of powerful producers, an extremely talented, world-renown cast and a captivating, well-written story,” says Arclight Films svp of sales and acquisitions Clay Epstein.

The Angel Makers is produced by Jeanna Polley, Alice de Sousa and Nicolas Steil.

“We are thrilled to be working with an extremely talented and dedicated team, from our amazing cast and crew to our international sales team at Arclight Films,” said Polley. “The Angel Makers is a dark, poignant romantic drama with just the right amount of comedic elements to give it that real-life quality. The film is something everyone can relate to as it brings the audience into the lives of some very courageous, strong and independent figures who demonstrate just how strong and resilient one can be in difficult times.”

Hendricks played Joan on AMC’s hit series Mad Men for seven seasons. Her recent films include Ryan Gosling’s Lost River and Dark Places, the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel starring Charlize Theron. She will also appear in Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming film The Neon Demon, and she’s repped by ICM Partners, LINK Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein.

Christina to Star in SundanceTV’s “Hap and Leonard”

‘Mad Men’s’ Christina Hendricks to Star in Sundance’s ‘Hap and Leonard’

Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks has found her follow-up role.

The Emmy nominee has joined the cast of the Sundance TV drama Hap and Leonard, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on the book series by Joe Lansdale, the six-episode series centers on a pair of best friends and martial arts experts Hap Collins (The Following’s James Purefoy) and Leonard Pine (Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Kenneth Williams) who struggle through misadventure in a bid to stay on the right side of the law in 1980 East Texas.

Hendricks will star as Hap’s ex-wife Trudy, who resurfaces after two years with a proposition that he can’t refuse. Equal parts funny and shocking, the drama offers a side-eyed look into race, class and friendship.

For Hendricks, the role marks her follow-up to AMC’s Mad Men — which garnered her five supporting actress Emmy nominations for her role as Joan Harris. The casting also keeps her in the AMC family as SundanceTV is owned by corporate parent AMC Networks and overseen by AMC president Charlie Collier, who has a longstanding relationship with the actress.

Hendricks, who also won two Critics’ Choice awards for her Mad Men performance, is repped by ICM Partners and Link Management. Her recent credits include Comedy Central’s spoof Another Period. The casting comes after Hendricks exited Showtime’s Cameron Crowe pilot Roadies, which will recast the part.

Hap and Leonard will air in 2016. The drama hails from Cold in July writers Jim Mickle and Nick Damici, marking the duo’s second Lansdale adaptation. The pair have adapted Lansdale’s novels, novellas and short stories of the same name for this drama. Mickle will direct, with Nick Schumaker and Jeremy Platt exec producing. Lansdale will co-exec produce with Lowell NorthropLinda Moran will produce. The drama is produced by Sundance Studios.

She’s joining a strong cast on the pilot, including the previously announced Luke Wilson (Old School), Imogen Poots (The Look of Love), Rafe Spall (One Day), Peter Cambor (NCIS: Los Angeles), and Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider).

Hendricks is best known for AMC’s Mad Men, which will air its final episodes in the spring. She’ll also be seen in the film Dark Places, adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestseller.

Christina to star in ‘The Hurricanes’

Christina Hendricks is attached to star in Jonathan Lynn-directed female buddy movie The Hurricanes, about three very different women who reunite to resurrect their once chart-topping 80s girl band.

Metro International is shopping Annalisa D’Innella’s script at the AFM, with shoot slated to get underway in February 2015.

Producers are Annalise Davis (The Railway Man) and Rajita Shah with Golden Globe-winning music producer Jimmy Harry also on board.

Additional casting is underway.

Additional finance comes from Belgian co-producers Entre Chien Et Loup (Filth), Creative England and Cutting Edge Group (The King’s Speech).

The script was selected at the Toronto Film Festival as one of 15 projects in the Finance Forum and was one of 10 UK projects with development support from MEDIA in 2012/13.

The script follows Kim Ayers, who twenty years earlier was the perkiest member of a hit 80s girl-band, The Hurricanes. Today, she works as a children’s entertainer and struggles to raise her daughter alone. But things seem set to change when an iconic Hurricanes tune is sampled by top rapper MC Freak and shoots straight to number one.

Kim tracks down Freak but soon discovers that a dodgy contract proves he owes her nothing. Nonetheless, struck by her fighting spirit, he offers her a lifeline. He will let her perform with him, but there’s a catch. He wants all three of the ‘The Hurricanes’.

So Kim must locate estranged band-mates Nicky Bliss, last seen in rehab and Alex Moon, now an angry feminist poet, and persuade them to resurrect their once chart topping band.

Mad Men Serves “Seven and Seven”

AMC announced today that the final season of the Lionsgate series Mad Men will be expanded to 14 episodes and equally portioned with seven episodes airing in spring of 2014 (“The Beginning”) and the final seven episodes of this iconic series (“The End of an Era”) airing in the spring of 2015.

“This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us with Breaking Bad which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “We are determined to bring Mad Men a similar showcase. In an era where high-end content is savored and analyzed, and catch-up time is used well to drive back to live events, we believe this is the best way to release the now 14 episodes than remain of this iconic series.”

“We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience,” said Matthew Weiner, creator and executive producer, Mad Men. “The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience.”

Mad Men has had a transcendent impact on our popular culture, and it has played a prominent role in building our Lionsgate brand,” said Kevin Beggs, Chairman, Lionsgate Television Group. “We anticipate a remarkable seventh season thanks to the brilliance of Matthew Weiner, the entire creative and production team, and our tremendous partnership with AMC. We’re all working to ensure that the series will have the kind of powerful send-off it so richly deserves.”

The first half of the final season of Mad Men will premiere on AMC this spring.

Since the series premiere in 2007, “Mad Men” has become one of television’s most honored shows. The show has earned six Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series leading to four wins for Outstanding Drama Series. Christina Hendricks and Geoffrey Arend practice ‘two-week rule’ in their marriage

Geoffrey Arend and Christina Hendricks know what it takes to keep a marriage of two actors going, at least for them.

“We’ve been very lucky so far,” ABC “Body of Proof” co-star Arend tells Zap2it about his union with AMC “Mad Men” regular Hendricks. “We’ve been working in the same city [Los Angeles], where a lot of times, you get split. When we got married, the day after, we both left to go to different places for movie jobs. I went to Toronto and she went to Atlanta.

“We didn’t see each other for two-and-a-half weeks. That kind of thing happens sometimes, but we have a two-week rule. Two weeks can’t go by without us seeing each other, and that’s helpful for the mind and heart. Also, we just got a new puppy, so that’s been keeping us home quite a bit. It’s like having a baby.”

The Season 3 episodes of “Body of Proof” — which began airing Tuesday (Feb. 19) with Arend back as pathologist Ethan — have been completed, while Hendricks is continuing filming as 1960s ad-agency partner Joan in the seventh season of “Mad Men” that debuts Sunday, April 7.

“The first season of each of our shows, we would at times pick up the other’s scripts and take a glance,” Arend reports, “but now, we really don’t. Honestly, after the first couple, I stopped reading the scripts for ‘Mad Men.’ It’s just such a joy to watch when it’s fully realized on the screen, I don’t want to spoil anything for myself.”

Hendricks guest-starred in an early episode of “Body of Proof,” and though he says he’d love to have her on the show again, Arend isn’t sure that’s in the cards.

“She’s got so much stuff going on right now, I honestly don’t think we could get her,” he muses. “She’s doing a movie with Ryan Gosling that he’s also directing (‘How to Catch a Monster’), then she has another one that sounds like a dream job. And, of course, she’s finishing out ‘Mad Men’ for the new season, so there really isn’t any time. Maybe if we get a Season 4 pick-up, she’ll come back.”
